How Dental Check-ups Can Save Your Life

 In Dental Hygiene, Health, News

If you thought that visiting the dentist was just about check-ups, hygiene appointments and the odd cosmetic treatment, you’d be wrong. Those trips to the dentist could actually be saving your life…

It’s long been established that gum disease has links to the following serious health conditions:

* Heart disease and heart attacks
* Diabetes
* Strokes
* Rheumatoid arthritis

But new research also suggests that having good oral hygiene may lessen your chances of catching another serious illness: pneumonia.

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that’s typically caused by a bacterial infection. Regular visits to your dentist can help reduce the bacteria that causes these infections.

People who never visit the dentist are 87% more likely to catch the disease than those who have regular, twice-yearly check-ups and cleanings.

Symptoms of pneumonia include:

* Chest pains
* Loss of appetite
* Coughing
* Coughing blood
* Breathing difficulties
* Cold sweats
* Headaches
* Fatigue
* Vomiting
* Confusion

The disease is particularly common in the autumn and winter months so it makes sense to be a little more vigilant at this time of the year.

The good news is that you can help ward off pneumonia and the other serious illnesses above by simply cleaning your teeth for two minutes, twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, flossing your teeth and by visiting your dentist every 6 months.
