The World’s Best Mulled Wine Recipe!

 In News

As we head into the Festive Season, the staff at Euro Dental Care are getting excited about Christmas and the New Year… So we thought we’d share with you one of our favourite festive treats – the world’s best mulled wine recipe!

There’s nothing quite like the smell (and taste!) of a good glass of mulled wine for making you feel all warm and Christmassy so we hope you’ll give it a try!

There are quite a few variations of mulled wine and you can tweak the recipe until you get it just right. Here’s our version

1 750ml bottle of red wine
100 – 150g of castor sugar (as dentists we recommend 100g but use 150 if you like it sweeter!)
1 orange thinly sliced
2 lemons thinly sliced
5 cloves
1 5cm cinnamon stick
1 star anise
1 tsp fresh nutmeg
300ml/½ pint of water

There are two ways of making this mulled wine. The first reduces (or even completely removes) the amount of alcohol in the mulled wine, while the second preserves it. Use the method that suits you best!

Method 1 (low/no alcohol)
1. Add the water, wine, fruit, sugar and spices to a large saucepan and bring to the boil
2. Let stand for 10 minutes
3. Strain the mixture into glasses or a punch bowl if you own one (we don’t!)
4. Drink!

Method 2
1. Add the water, sugar and spices to a large saucepan and bring to the boil
2. Let stand for 10 minutes
3. Add the wine and the fruit and heat through without boiling (this will preserve the alcohol which will otherwise evaporate)
4. Strain the mixture into glasses
5. Drink!

Although this mulled wine is fantastic, you might want to be careful how you go if you don’t fancy getting stained teeth…

The best thing to do is remember to give them a brush an hour or so after drinking this. It’s not a good idea to brush right after eating or drinking anything acidic as your tooth enamel may become softened and therefore easier to brush off! (This is actually a really important tip and many people who brush right after meals may actually be damaging their teeth…)

Enjoy your mulled wine!
